This article was written by UC Davis ARE PhD student Felipe Grimaldi Avileis. It is the second of several excellent articles written by students in my ARE 231 class in Fall 2023 that I'll be posting here. Global chocolate prices have gone up by 25% in the last two years. The reason for that price increase is still up for debate. In this article we will travel to Asia and Africa to try to explain what is going on with the two main ingredients of chocolate: sugar and cocoa. Along the way, we will figure out what has led to this increase in prices and what the outlook might be.
Great summary re identifying top global exporters/price drivers. Fascinating as well given Hershey's recently announced layoff plans.
